[2021] Radiation levels at Fukushima plant far worse (10 Siverts)

Exceedingly high radiation levels found inside crippled reactor buildings at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant were labeled by nuclear regulators as an “extremely serious” challenge to the shutdown process and overall decommissioning of the site.

The Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) said a huge amount of radioactive materials apparently had attached to shield plugs of the containment vessels in the No. 2 and No. 3 reactors.

Radiation levels were estimated at 10 sieverts per hour, a lethal dose for anyone who spends even an hour in the vicinity, according to experts.

The finding would make it exceptionally difficult for workers to move the shield plugs, raising the prospect that the plan to decommission the reactors will have to be reassessed.

Toyoshi Fuketa, chairman of the NRA, noted that removing the highly contaminated shield plugs added to the enormous difficulty of retrieving nuclear fuel debris, the most daunting part of the decommissioning process.

“It appears that nuclear debris lies at an elevated place,” he said at a news conference earlier this month. “This will have a huge impact on the whole process of decommissioning work.”

A shield plug, made of reinforced concrete, is circular in shape and measures about 12 meters in diameter.

It has a triple-layer structure, with each layer about 60 centimeters thick. It is placed above the containment vessel like a lid on the top floor of a reactor building.

The shield plug blocks radiation from the reactor core at normal times.

When nuclear fuels need to be replaced, workers remove a shield plug to gain access to the interior of the containment vessel.

In a study that resumed in September after about a five-year hiatus, the NRA carried out fresh measurements of radiation levels in the vicinity of the shield plugs of the No. 2 and No. 3 reactors.

The study was undertaken following investigations by Tokyo Electric Power Co., operator of the plant, and other entities, which had shown extraordinary levels of radiations there.

The NRA’s study found that the amount of radioactive cesium 137 was estimated at 20-40 petabecquerels between the space between the top and middle layers of the shied plug of the No. 2 reactor.

That works out to more than 10 sieverts per hour based on readings of radiation levels nearby. Radiation at such levels can kill a person if they are exposed for an hour, according to experts.

The estimated figure was 30 petabecquerels for the No. 3 reactor.

In the triple meltdown triggered by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster, the shield plug of the No. 1 reactor slipped out of place and was damaged by a hydrogen explosion that occurred at the reactor building.

As larger amounts of cesium 137 leaked from the No. 1 reactor through the damaged plug, the amount of the radioactive material attached to its shield plug was estimated at 0.16 petabecquerels, considerably lower than for the No. 2 and No. 3 reactors.

In contrast, the shield plugs for the No. 2 and No. 3 reactors remained relatively unscathed, blocking a huge amount of radioactive substances that leaked from their containment vessels from escaping into the atmosphere, according to the NRA.

TEPCO announced Dec. 24 that the removal of nuclear fuel debris will be postponed to 2022 or later, rather than the initially scheduled 2021, due to a delay in the development of equipment to carry out the work.

☢ [2017] Chinese Embassy Issue Radiation Warning ☢

The Chinese Embassy in Japan have issued a radiation warning over Fukushima radiation last Sunday, February 2017 causing some panic in China. But in Japan, everything went on normally, tourists and residents remain largely unaffected by the radiation matter.

In recent years, as the popularity of Japan as a tourist destination increases, Chinese people have
developed a love-hate relationship with their neighbor. Any political rift or societal change between the two countries can cause large-scale effects

An update of an old issue in Japan has sent ripples across the East China Sea to shake China. After Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) announced it's latest analysis of the inside of its crippled nuclear plant in Fukushima that showed the radiation level there has seemingly now risen from 73 sieverts per hour to 530 sieverts.

A lethal radiation dose is considered to be around 10 sieverts exposure for only a few minutes! With a slow death to follow from radiation sickness..

However the news of Fukushimas deadly 530 sievert radiation record that might I add puts the 1986 Chernobyl disaster to shame have been traveling fast on the Chinese Internet.

Last Sunday, the Chinese Embassy in Japan issued a safety warning in reaction to this announcement, telling Chinese citizens to manage their travel plans to avoid potential radiation risks that may come if nuclear material leaks out into the surrounding environment. The warning caused even more discussion and when rumors started spreading, many Chinese became worried, some even canceling their trips to Japan.

Business as usual

A couple of weeks after the news came out, people in Japan seemed as calm and reserved as ever. There are still many Chinese tourists on the streets and in shops. According to Chinese tourism agencies, their business has been basically unaffected.

The director of a large Chinese travel agency told the Global Times last Sunday that Fukushima wasn't a regular travel destination for Chinese tourists anyway, and the company doesn't offer any travel packages there.

Li Dan, manager of a branch of the Beijing-based Tianping International Travel Agency, said that there haven't been any tour groups traveling to Fukushima since the 2011 earthquake and resulting tsunami. She also said that even tourists who travel independently do not usually go to Fukushima.

Last week, Will Davis, a member of the American Nuclear Society, refuted claims that radiation levels are soaring at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant as "demonstrably false." In a post on the society's blog, Davis wrote that the readings have not changed and that TEPCO's reported 530 sieverts per hour estimate was not "unimaginable" or particularly worrying.

His argument is that rather than a real increase from 73 to 530 sieverts, the 530 reading is simply a more accurate estimate of the radiation level at a particularly affected area that has remained relatively unchanged over the past few years.

Compared with China, news of the radiation levels in Fukushima has not generated much discussion in Japan. The responses from the media or public to the Chinese safety alert are also few.

For people living in Tokyo, three hours' drive from Fukushima, life has continued as usual. While they feel a little concerned whenever such reports come out, they are not actively worried in their daily lives, several Japanese white-collar workers said.

For people trying to get their lives back to normal in the affected area, their biggest headache and frustration is the bad reputation and rumors that dog their agricultural products.

In supermarkets, consumers who are concerned about radiation contamination choose more expensive products from different areas over cheaper product from Fukushima. Local residents, NGOs and governments are still working to scrub the stain off the reputation of food produced in Fukushima.

"I am concerned about the long-term effects on our bodies," said Zhang Chen, a sociology student at Sophia University of Tokyo. "Even if they were to call off the alert, I would still be worried." Despite these concerns, she said she would continue to stay in Tokyo for the time being and try finding a job in Japan.

Meanwhile, several Chinese residents in Japan the Global Times interviewed expressed their faith that the Japanese government and media would keep people accurately updated on the Fukushima situation and any potential dangers.

Zhao Xue, a Chinese woman who works for a Japanese company in Tokyo told the Global Times she hasn't seen much focus in the newspaper headlines concerning this matter, the big stories recently are Trump and Toshiba's financial problems.

"Why would we panic over something like this? It's an updated version of old news," she said.

Others said as long as one stays out of the evacuation areas the Japanese government designated around the nuclear power plant, one has nothing to worry about. Besides, Tokyo is more than 300 kilometers from Fukushima and as so little radiation can reach there, there's nothing much to do besides go on with one's daily life.

Steam Event - Something Very Wrong at Fukushima

There is a heavy steam event taking place at Fukshima reactor building 4 at this very moment!

The livecam closest to the reactor building 4 is the only one that display the steam event taking place. The JNN livecam is currently offline showing a "green screen" and the Futaba traffic cam is not picking up anything. And the other livecam showing reactor buildings 1 and 2 does not pick up anything but a little bit of the ongoing radioactive releases.

The forecast for the next few days and weeks for people living in the Northern Hemisphere will be radioactive rain with a tad of sunshine and airborne radiation.  

And remember scientists say one medium banana packs about 422 milligrams of potassium, about 11 percent of the 4,700 milligrams adults should aim to get daily. So don't go eating any bananas this week, the added potassium could kill you! That will be all for today's radioactive news.

Fukushima Dodged Meteorite by 4min

Hi folks

So these past days there's been a lot of speculation as to what really happened with the Russian Meteorite that wrecked havoc Friday 15 Feb, 201 in Chelyabinsk and the events that took place and how little we are in the universe. Some people have even pointed out that because this event is not really that unique, that we get hit with space rocks all the time only this time it was bigger. With a size and mass of 17 meters and 10.000 tons even if this is a pretty small rock in space terms events like this have now become a real treat. Not only to people and infrastructure but to Nuclear Power Plants too.. Reports say no radiation was found at the crater and its energy release in the atmosphere was equivalent to nearly 500 kilotons.

So this got me thinking, what was the trajectory of this meteorite, I had to look a bit before I could find anything. Turned out it's found on the wiki. But that's only a little map of the thing. I wanted to know exactly where could this meteoroid have hit earth. So I aligned up the path of the meteorite in google earth and extended the line.. My jaw almost dropped because this thing went smack in the middle of FUKUSHIMA JAPAN

But that's not all, because of the rotating nature of our planet, it's equatorial speed of 465.1 m/s, 1,674.4 kilometers per hour (1,040.4 mph) × cos (28.59) = 1,470.23 kilometers per hour (913.56 mph). NASA estimates the meteorites velocity at 17.9 km/s means that if this meteorite would have entered our earth's atmosphere only 4 minutes earlier (3 min 58 sec to be exact) the impact could have been over Japan, Fukushima instead. It's still a long shot because of the many variables to take into consideration but still, this is pretty intense. And the treat is there.



I know there have been talks about space weapons in use, I'm not sure about that but if so must have been a bad aim..

Dmitry Medvedev, the Prime Minister of Russia, confirmed a meteor had struck Russia and said it proves the “entire planet” is vulnerable to meteors and a spaceguard system is needed to protect the planet from similar events in the future.

One thing is for sure though, the dinosaurs probably went extinct because of a impact much bigger than this or from a series of events leading to mass extinction and very few of them survived the change in climate and loss of biodiversity. However what would have happened if we put radiation contamination into the mix? What if there had been 100s of Nuclear Power Plants spewing radiation all over with radioactive fallout collecting in the air and on ground in the years following a major disaster. How much life would have survived that you think?

That's where we are today. We need to get rid of Nuclear because it's going to end us all.

I however would like to give a bit of hope though because even if there are still problems to solve, people are starting to think outside the box. Right or wrong, trying to come up with a solution that will make nuclear obsolete.

Simi Valley 240 Times 3-Mile Island Radiation Fallout

In 1959 a little known Nuclear Disaster only 30 Miles from Downtown Los Angeles began to unfold at an important Cold War facility located in Simi Valley. Simi Valley is an incorporated city located in a valley of the same name in the southeast corner of Ventura County, California, bordering the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

A 2.800 acres large Nuclear Site was built in the hills of Simi Valley a town of 8000 (back in the 50's. Current population 124,237 in 2010) The complex built there Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) is also an complex of industrial research and development facilities.

Several Experimental Nuclear Reactors have been tested at this facility that the Atomic Energy Commission hoped could become commercially viable. One of the reactors at Simi Valley used Sodium instead of Water as a coolant of the Nuclear Reactor Fuel. It was known as the Sodium Reactor Experiment (SRE). But the experiment went horrible wrong, triggering an technological nightmare putting Nuclear Disasters like 3-Mile Island to shame. What happened at Simi Valley turned out to become the worst nuclear disaster in U.S. history. With amounts of radiation leaked to the environment and atomosphere more than 240 times that of the accident at 3-Mile Island. But none was told about this.

5 weeks after the Nuclear Disaster the Atomic Energy Commission released an press release claiming that only 1 Nuclear Fuel Rod had been slightly damaged and NO Radiation had been released into the environment. However that is far, far from the truth.. The Atomic Energy Commission was trying to cover up the fact that 13 Fuel Rods had been damaged and High Levels of Radiation had already been released from the failed experimental nuclear reactor. 1/3 of the Nuclear Fuel had experienced melting, it was one of the worst Nuclear Accidents in the history of the U.S and the Atomic Energy Commission lied about it.

All this would have never been disclosed at all if it was not for Daniel Hirsch's student Michael Rose. The SSFL facility has had some 24 nuclear accidents over the years. These accidents go by the name "excursions" to hide the seriousness of the situations from the common public. There have been several non-nuclear accidents at the site as well. A most recent one (that are known to the public) occurred in 1994 when one scientist was killed an another was seriously injured while trying to (illegally) dispose of chemicals by burning them..

Jeff rense here again with a MUST HEAR interview with Yoichi Shimatsu from Hong Kong done November 14, 2011. They talk about some seriouse matters about Reactor Nr. 6 possible meltdown and the tour bus with the journalists passing reactor Nr. 2 measured radiation levels 1000 millisieverts or 1 Sieverts when they drove by the buildings considered a "safe place"..

Radiation is now falling down on Europe and Scandinavia with Sweden and other countries alarmed by Iodine-131 on their soil. They are dumbfounded why this is showing up because in their eyes "it can't be from Fukushima" All along the people in the know about the Jet Stream will know that this time of the year there is Winter Weather in Europe bringing down Arctic Air that is filled with radiation Iodine-131 coming from Fukushima more so now than ever before and possibly from Fukushima Reactor Number 6 that's also in meltdown hidden from the public and media!!!

Jeff Rense: OK and we are back, glad you are along tonight Monday we start another week, second week of November we move right now to Hong Kong to talk to our colleague Yoichi Shimatsu one of the worlds truly great and heroic environmental analysts, researchers and he is totally scientific and has been at this for decades since before the great tragedy at Chernobyl. Are you there Yoichi?

Yoichi Shimatsu: Yes hello Jeff.

Jeff Rense: Hi and welcome back, you sound good.

Yoichi Shimatsu: I’m just in a room with a big echo so that’s all.

Jeff Rense: Yeah we get a little bit of a delay but at least you are not touring the Fukushima plant with the rest of the media in the bus.

Yoichi Shimatsu: Yeah, I’m lucky not too, that bus load of journalists they passed by reactor Nr. 2 and you know not the, certainly not the .. reactor on site but they got a reading of 1000 millisieverts that’s per hour. That’s 1 Sieverts (I’m correcting Yoichi here) If it had been 3 times higher than that they would all be sick, 5 times higher and they would have all been dead. So massive exposure.. 

Jeff Rense: Now this is, that what Yoichi is saying, these people where in the bus and they just drove and they were not allowed outside the bus, they had full body suits, respirators on and they where exposed to 1 millisieverts an hour just by passing that damn reactor...

Yoichi Shimatsu: Well no we are talking about 1000 millisieverts now that’s 1 Sieverts per hour. 

Jeff Rense: 1 Sieverts an hour, and absolutely, what the annual allowed rate is something like 3 millisieverts an year, isn’t that considered maximal?

Yoichi Shimatsu: Yeah we are talking about you know way more than 1000 times higher than that, so in other words if the bus had stayed there for 5 hours .. they would all be dead in five hours.

Jeff Rense: That’s absolutely true, that’s astonishing but true.

Yoichi Shimatsu: So basically they are told at the same time by the management that they are perfectly safe there you know. So it’s totally contradictory. 

Jeff Rense: One of the most pathetic things.

Yoichi Shimatsu: So that’s is a standard site, so they didn’t take them to lets say into the sites where there is water draining out or anything like that you know, this is very selective. And considered on of the safer place.

Jeff Rense: Now one of the stories that came out which was particularly disgusting was in, the mai.. I guess mai, how do you pronounce it in Japanese? Mainichi? OK

Yoichi Shimatsu: Mainichi yeah, Mai is Every, and Nichi is day, yeah.

Jeff Rense: OK very good, well in the Mainichi Daily News the paragraph that got me and I’ll just read it to you again it said. At reactor Nr. 1, 2 and 3 melted nuclear fuel seems to be penetrating the pressure vessels and even leaking out from under the reactor buildings. 

Yoichi Shimatsu: Oh yeah I mean, this is a find exactly, so basically the shield you know the shroud cracked and leaked, we know that. But what is surprising that it’s leaking from the side too and not just from the base, that’s what interesting, it means that it’s totally fractured you know probably 180 degrees across the entire, it’s broken in half that’s what it would indicate. 

Jeff Rense: Right, right, yeah, the stories are crazy.

Yoichi Shimatsu: This is a massive rupture of it which means that it’s really no way of stop, and the press representatives there with TEPCO admitted they were not doing anything than dumping water on top of the reactor..

Jeff Rense: That still, and it’s what 8-9 months March, it’s 9 months after or something like that and they are doing nothing different..

Yoichi Shimatsu: Yeah they cant really get close enough to really you know repair any of the damage part, to do any sealing or anything like that.. Blocking so they are just still pouring water and there are 2000 people there just trying to get the electricity going and keep the waterpumps moving.

Jeff Rense: So this is exactly what you..

Yoichi Shimatsu: And, and yeah, and they are claiming that by the end of this year we are talking about a month and a few days..

Jeff Rense: Ah geez, cold shutdown.

Yoichi Shimatsu: The plant basically will be in cold shutdown, maybe so but we are very disturbed by the other reports of this Iodine-131 flying across the northern hemisphere, across the Arctic into Europe and you know this would indicate that a meltdown, another meltdown is occurring and journalists where not taken to plant Nr. 5 OK. There may have been problems.. Excuse me not number 5 plant number 6. So which might have been operating by the time and might be the source of the emission.

Jeff Rense: You are talking about reactor Nr. 6? OK.

Yoichi Shimatsu: Reactor Nr. 6 yeah, we are talking about reactor number 6 which was supposedly operational from the first reports that we got, was producing electricity, (plutonium? can’t make out what’s said) reactor and when reactor 3 blew you know they started eristic now we are kind of back to 6 as a … in this whole affair because if you know if you have reporters coming into Fukushima plant in the daytime it means that they are back to night time releases as they where earlier you know in the summer when I was there. They where doing these night time releases, so this dissemination have to be coming from reactor number 6 which might be in a state of meltdown, and they are sort of isolated these, reactors 5 and 6 are isolated kind of on a mini peninsula separated from the other plant separated by a body of water. So it would be very, very easy to keep the press and the specters away from this site.

Jeff Rense: Now there where some reports early..

Yoichi Shimatsu: The don’t want to admit that that reactor was loaded and running at that time, because that would be 4 reactors were running when only 3 were legally allowed too under regulation.

Jeff Rense: We had reports Yoichi of smoke coming either 5 and 6 or 6 and those stories went away.

Yoichi Shimatsu: 6 Yeah exactly..

Jeff Rense: So clearly, and there was a story a month ago that Hitatchi engineers where rushed to reactor 6 to try and do something but I think that it’s safe to say that they are in meltdown there too.

Yoichi Shimatsu: Yeah I think that we would pin point that particular reactor since there where initially reported as operating at the time of the quake and later that was canceled just that number you know that 3 reactor was in operation, just complete fiction a lie rather than 4 reactors. So a cover up must have occurred so that we would not look too intensely as to why number 3 was involved what it was exactly doing at the time as the tsunami. So they have to maintain this cover up and then I think we, everyone is saying that the IAEA you know the IAEA was stating that this Iodine-131 was not coming from Fukushim. Well you know this.. Where are they getting their information from? From TEPCO of course, Tokyo Electric Power the operators of the plant… 

Jeff Rense: HA! Laughing..

Yoichi Shimatsu: So the IAEA they sort of are all lying they didn’t do their own inspection and this is what they are telling the world press, so I think the real problem here the IAEA. And as you know IAEA, a lot of people around the world are telling Insepctor Director Mr. Yukiya Amano you know part of the Japanese Nuclear Engineering Community the head of IAEA making all this fuss around Iran on some very dodgy data you Irans nuclear program. So this whole organization you know the central depictive is very suspect now and we are seeing radiation, low levels of course but you have to understand this fallout is traveling all.. it makes a huge difference you know, it’s falling, it’s crossing the Pacific and then going into Canada swooping down to the Midwestern states and back up over Greenland and Scandinavia and again you know when I tried to say before this is probably the source of this new Ozone hole. New expanding Ozone hole over the Artic it’s primarily Iodine coming out of Fukushima and now with this new wave of Iodine landing in Sweden, Austria, Czechoslovakia and several other countries it sort of alarming that you know the radioactive material can traverse that large distance within that 8 day half life of Iodine. It’s probably moving, it takes 5 or less than 5 days to move across you know. So this is what we are really seeing and now IAEA cover up basically going on in cooperation with Tokyo Electric.

Jeff Rense: Exactly well the IAEA is nothing less than a front company an a ledge company that’s obviously controlled by the nuclear power industry and always had, and what a better way to try to please yourself than please yourself so there you go. 

Yoichi Shimatsu: Exactly and what other nuclear plant are in that path, only maybe the one of Virginia, is it melting down? There might be a leak but I doubt that it’s melting down.

Jeff Rense: North Anna is not melting down to my knowledge, no..

Yoichi Shimatsu: Right, right, right so that’s the problem there is no other suspect plant along that path so.

Jeff Rense: They are trying to claim that something..

Yoichi Shimatsu: Vernmount that the radiation going to Russia, there is no radiation in Russia so far.

Jeff Rense: Well they try and say that something about a plant in Ukraine but that’s ridiculous because it’s passed the point of dissemination of this material.

Yoichi Shimatsu: Yeah exactly, as you know it’s very cold winter weather now in Europe and so the Jet stream is bringing down Arctic air, it’s not traveling against the Jet Stream. So it would not be Chernobyl or anything like that, it would not be those countries. The pathway suggests Fukushima, this is the same pathway we have been talking about for months. 

Jeff Rense: Yeah exactly.

Yoichi Shimatsu: With minor variations of course in the curve you know in this but basically it ends up in northern Europe and usually hits the Urals, interesting this time it did not get to Ural mountains because it’s the winter weather you know, the moisture when radiation hits clouds in the Arctic it tends to crystallize and fall down as light snow, ice particles over Europe and so will now reach it’s just to heavy with the ice to reach the Ural mountains…

Fukushima Soil Hotspots 10 Times That of Chernobyl Closed Zone Levels

This is from a meeting held August 29, 2011. The map show the measurements done from some 2200 soil samples. The highest readings of Caesium-137 was found in Okuma-machi with 15,450,000 becquerels/square meter. This is more than 10 times that of Chernobyl confiscation/closed zone level of cesium-137. And if combined with Caesium-134 the soil tests would be twice that 29,460,000 becquerels/square meter. 

So far 6 municipalities including Iitate-mura and Minami Soma City have locations that exceeded the Chernobyl confiscation/closed zone level of cesium-137.

Note: Caesium-137 half-life is 30 years and Caesium-134 half-life 2 years.


The soil contamination as the result of the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant accident was reported on the August 29 meeting at the Ministry of Education and Science.

The survey found 34 locations in 6 municipalities exceeding the level of the confiscation/closed zone of the Chernobyl accident (1,480,000 becquerels/square meter of cesium-137 in soil). The purpose of the survey was to understand the radiation exposure of the residents. Prime Minister Kan said on August 27 that there might be locations where the residents wouldn't be able to return for a long time. The survey data validates the prime minister's comment.

According to the survey, the highest cesium-137 concentration in soil as of June 14 was in Okuma-machi in Fukushima Prefecture, within the no-entry evacuation zone, at 15,450,000 becquerels/square meter. If combined with cesium-134, the radioactive cesium concentration was 29,460,000 becquerels/square meter. 

Total 16 location in 4 municipalities (Okuma-machi, Futaba-machi, Namie-machi, Tomioka-machi) exceeded 3,000,000 becquerels/square meter in cesium-137 concentration. The area with the high cesium-137 concentration extends northwest from the nuclear power plant. In total, 6 municipalities including Iitate-mura and Minami Soma City had the locations that exceeded the Chernobyl confiscation/closed zone level of cesium-137. The Ministry measured the soil samples from about 2,200 locations.

Japanese Citizen Had 252,422 becquerels Kg When Tested

From a TV show "News Watch 9" NHK during a report about the Fukushima disaster at a body counter check. One of the cameras caught one of the result sheets on film.
The numbers read Cs-137 129,746 Bq + Cs-134 122,676 Bq = 252,422 Bq/kg


To spell it out for you. A person OUTSIDE the evacuation in Minami soma shi zone some 30km from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Who had a whole body counter check. Got a internal reading of more than 250.000 Becquerels of radioactive Ceasium-137 and 134.


This means that person had severe internal exposure!


The average human experiences 4400 becquerels from decaying potassium-40 which is naturally present within the body. Ceasium-137 have a half-life of 30 years and Ceasium-134 have a half-life of 2 years .




After the Chernobyl disaster Soviet authorities started evacuating people from the area around Chernobyl only on the second day after the disaster (after 36 hours). By May 1986, about a month later, all those living within a 30 km (18 mile) radius of the plant — about 116,000 people — had been relocated. This area is often referred to as the zone of alienation (Picture). However, radiation affected the area in a much wider scale than this 30 km radius.
According to reports from Soviet scientists, 28,000 km² (10,800 mi²) were contaminated by cesium-137 to levels greater than 185 kBq/m². Roughly 830,000 people lived in this area. About 10,500 km ² (4,000 mi²) were contaminated by caesium-137 to levels greater than 555 kBq/m². Of this total, roughly 7,000 km² (2,700 mi²) lie in Belarus, 2,000 km² (800 mi²) in the Russian Federation and 1,500 km² (580 mi²) in Ukraine. About 250,000 people lived in this area. These reported data were corroborated by the International Chernobyl Project.

The Battle of Chernobyl - Best Documentary about Chernobyl

This documentary of the Chernobyl disaster is a MUST SEE! The Battle of Chernobyl is the best made movie so far. The Battle of Chernobyl contains rare original footage, pictures and good re-enactments. This along with interviews with political leaders, scientists, soldiers, journalist, photographer and several military personnel and real footage of the damaged nuclear reactor.

There are some very good comments made in this movie from the people involved. And this documentary is something you must watch to better understand the extent of the Fukushima disaster. The things the Russians did to prevent a second explosion is something many can't really grasp. The Battle of Chernobyl tells this story very well.

The Battle of Chernobyl tell us many important things about the situation at Fukushima Daiichi. We get to hear from a worker at reactor unit 4 about the beautiful colors going up into the night sky 1000 meters during the reactor explosion. The cover-up and Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev the former Soviet statesman. Also rare footage from the town Pripyat the day after where we get to see the flashes on the camera during filming caused by radiation.


We get to hear from the brave workers called Bio-Robots recieving 1700 rads or 17.000.000 Millisieverts/Hr radiation levels when working on top of the reactor. They could only work for 45 sec at time before the radiation would be to much. Working with 30kg makeshift lead suits. Some had nosebleeds coming down afterwards. They felt like they had been sucked dry by a vampire. When their eyes started to hurt and they started to taste a metallic taste of lead in their mouths they knew that they had reacherd their limit. But they did their job even picking up the 15.000.000 Millisieverts/Hr contaminated concrete blocks with their hands trowing it of the reactors roof. In the end they had reduced the radiation levels with some 30%. Got a $100 bonus and a certificate. The Bio-Robots can't work anymore because the high radiation levels they were exposed to. Many not even in their 50s now are unable to make a living because of this.


The Bio-Robots were used because the radio controlled equipment, looking like something you would send to the moon that should do the job malfunctioned because the extreme radiation affected the electronics. Before this six hundred (600) helicopter pilots were employed to drop lead over the open reactor to help cool it down and put out the fire. All the pilots were exposed to lethal doses of radiation, and “all” six hundred pilots died.  

Not only did the pilots die, but as the lead vaporized with the heat, many people, including children in the city, inhaled high doses of lead. Since there was concern that the meltdown would contaminate the water table below, 2,500 miners were dispatched to manually dig below the plant to make way to encase the reactor core.  Half of those miners died, and many others became very ill with radiation sickness.

The work done and the cost of 18 Billion Dollars in todays money was important not only to limit the radioactive material from spreading around the world but also to prevent a second nuclear explosion. An explosion with the potential of rendering all of Europe uninhabitable. Some would say that the lead dropped in the reactor to try and cool it down were the wrong thing to do. But with the severity of the disaster it was the only right thing to do.

In all, it was said that 500,000 people (other accounts claim 600,000 people) were dispatched to the Chernobyl plant to contain the reactor, half of whom have died since then as a result of radiation exposure and today about 200,000 are on permanent disability due to sicknesses from their radiation exposure.

Again this is a must watch for anyone. Really well done documentary about the Chernobyl disaster. And I really hope you take what is said to heart. And look at what the Russians did in 1986.

TEPCO Area Around Pipe as Off-Limits Extreme Radiation

Investigating the 10-plus sieverts/hour radiation at the bottom of the main exhaust duct for the Reactors 1 and 2 at Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, TEPCO announced on August 4 that 3.6 sieverts/hour radiation was detected at the drain pipe that connects to the bottom of the main exhaust stack for Reactors 1 and 2.

The pipe is for draining rainwater from the bottom of the exhaust stack. 3.6 sieverts/hour radiation was measured at several meters from the exhaust stack. TEPCO has designated the area around the pipe as off-limits.

Arnie Gundersen 10+ Sievert Radiation Levels at Fukushima

Mr. Gundersen Fairwinds.com is talking on Skype Video about the extreme radiation levels 10+ Sieverts/Hr or 10.000 Millisieverts/Hr found OUTSIDE at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Gundersen say he use Rem to measure radiation Rem (Roentgen Equivalent Mammal/Man; 1 rem=0.01 Sv). This means the Roentgen radiation exposure measured outside the Fukushima Daiichi plant is 1000 rems. Well actually the radiation levels went off the scale so we can only say for sure that there are 1000+ rems found.

The disturbing thing about this is the extreme radiation level was found in a stack used to vent hot gases from the reactor into the air. The hot gases containing radiation condensed going up the pipe turning back into water and over time collected at the bottom. This means the extreme radiation levels found are only the tip of the iceberg. They have been venting this into the air for at least 140 days already.

Highest radioactivity level detected at nuke plant

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says it has detected 10,000 millisieverts of radioactivity per hour at the plant. The level is the highest detected there since the nuclear accident in March.

Workers of Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, on Monday measured the extremely high level of radioactivity near pipes at the bottom of a duct between the No.1 and neighboring No.2 reactor buildings.

According to the science ministry's brochure, if a human received 10,000 millisieverts, they would likely die within a week or two.

TEPCO has restricted access to the site and the surrounding area.

The utility says the workers taking measurements on Monday were exposed to up to 4 millisieverts.

The utility says the high level of radioactivity was detected because the pipes were used to vent air containing radioactive substances from the crippled No.1 reactor on March 12th.

The utility had detected a maximum of 1,000 millisieverts per hour outdoors in debris, and also found a maximum of 4,000 millisieverts per hour indoors in one of the reactor buildings.

Robot Measure Over 5 Sieverts OUTSIDE Fukushima Reactor 1

The robot sent into Fukushima to measure radiation levels called "Packbot" did actually measure more than 5 Sieverts/Hr. This is because the meter went overscale. And not only that, the radiation levels for the meter went overscale OUTSIDE the "train room" on the second floor.

Look at the radiation readings in the picture picked up by the "Packbot". The path that the robot took is trought an air conditioning room on the second floor. At the start there was 18 Millisieverts/Hr but this number quickly rise. It jumps to 300 Millisieverts/Hr almost instantly inside the air conditioning room and climbes to 2000 Millisieverts/Hr. When the Packbot is approaching the opening at the "train room" the radiation level goes overscale and spikes the 5000 Millisieverts/Hr radiation detector used by the remote controlled "Packbot".
It's a safe bet to say that if the radiation level increase in a linear fashion and nothing is shielding the radiation. Then the numbers would probably be in the 10+ Sieverts/Hr inside the "train room". But there are some heavy equipment that is shown in the picture that could shield the radiation levels measured by the Packbot. If so then who knows how high the radiation is inside the room.

Tepco Reports Second Deadly Radiation Reading at Fukushima Nuclear Plant

Tokyo Electric Power Co. reported its second deadly radiation reading in as many days at its wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant north of Tokyo.
The utility known as Tepco said yesterday it detected 5 sieverts of radiation per hour in the No. 1 reactor building. On Aug. 1 in another area it recorded radiation of 10 sieverts per hour, enough to kill a personwithin a few weeksafter a single exposure, according to the World Nuclear Association.
Radiation has impeded attempts to replace cooling systems to bring three melted reactors and four damaged spent fuel ponds under control after a tsunami on March 11 crippled the plant. The latest reading was taken on the second floor of the No. 1 reactor building and will stop workers entering the area.
“It’s probably the first of many more to come,” said Michael Friedlander, who spent 13 years operating nuclear power plants in the U.S., including the Crystal River Station in Florida. “Although I am not surprised, it concerns me greatly; the issue is the worker safety.”
The 10 sieverts of radiation detected on Aug. 1 outside reactor buildings was the highest the Geiger counters used were capable of reading, indicating the level could have been higher, Junichi Matsumoto, a general manager at the utility, said at a press conference.

Upper Limit

“Ten sieverts is the upper limit for many dosimeters and almost equal to the amount that killed workers at the JCO nuclear accident in 1999,” said Tomoko Murakami, a nuclear researcher at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan.
In that accident, then the world’s worst since Chernobyl in 1986, more than 600 people were exposed to radiation after workers inadvertently started a nuclear chain reaction while processing nuclear fuel at a plant near Tokyo. Two employees of JCO Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., died from radiation exposure.
Tepco was forced to pump water into the three Fukushima reactors after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disabled cooling systems. The company in May estimated there would be 200,000 tons of radiated water in basements and other areas of the Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant by December.
“If nuclear fuels melted through containment chambers, Tepco will find even higher radiation readings after water in building basements is removed,” said Tetsuo Ito, the head of the Atomic Energy Research Institute at Kinki University.

Radiation Leaks

Tepco has been criticized by the government for withholding radiation data and other missteps that have worsened the crisis. About 160,000 people have been evacuated from areas stretching 20 kilometers and more from the plant.
On May 27, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Tepco’s withholding radiation data was contributing to “public distrust.” The utility responded by saying it will publish in August the combined figures of radiation released into the atmosphere and in contaminated water. It hasn’t given a date for release of that information.
Radiation leaks from the Fukushima reactors have spread over 600 square kilometers, Tomio Kawata, a fellow at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan, said in a research report published on May 24 and given to the government.
Radioactive soil in pockets of areas outside the exclusion zone around the plant have reached the same level as in Chernobyl following a reactor explosion in the former Soviet Union, the report said.

Hot Spots

The threats to Japan’s food chain are also multiplying as radioactive cesium emissions from the Fukushima plant spread. Contaminated beef has been found on supermarket shelves around the country, forcing the government to ban cattle shipments from areas in northern Japan.
The latest high radiation readings are probably coming from materials released during early failed attempts to release pressure in containment vessels and vent hydrogen gas to prevent explosions that damaged reactor buildings, Matsumoto said. There were about 2,760 workers at the plant on Aug 1.
Tepco on April 17 set out a so-called road map to end the crisis by January, aiming to bring down radiation levels at the plant within three months and then achieve a so-called cold shutdown where reactor temperatures fall below 100 degrees Celsius (212 degrees Fahrenheit).
The utility needs to investigate other areas that may hold high radiation levels in line with the cold-shutdown and clean up, said Murakami at Energy Economics.
“Tepco workers and its subcontractors who know the Fukushima plant well may be the only ones that can discover such hot spots,” he said. “For people new to the plant it’s deadly.”

Geiger Counters - Radiation Detection Meters - Handheld Radiation Detector



When it comes to radiation detection meters you really have a wide field of gadgets to choose from, however radiation detectors are the most common to use. First of all if you need to know what type of radiation you are looking for. There are Alpha, Beta and Gamma radiation detectors. And also there is neutron emission of nuclear radiation. And all these different types of emissions have radiation detectors for a specific type of radiation that you can buy radiation detector for. Some also measure both Alpha and Beta. Others detect Alpha, Beta and Gamma. While others let you measure Beta and Gamma radiation.



What most people have use for though are Dosimeters you can buy a handheld radiation detector pretty cheap that are good addition to a survival kit. There are different kinds that you can use that will detect radiation. There are radiation badges that will tell you when radiation become high. Workers at nuclear power plants use these to inform them of how much radiation they have been exposed to. Now also children in the Fukushima prefecture have each been given a radiation badge so they know if they are exposed to radiation. Some come in the shape of a pen that you can carry in your pocket while other are made more compact so that you can attach them to your keychain. And then you have what is called a personal radiation monitor. These are also called Dosimeters and also normally called Geiger counters. Although not all use the Geiger-Muller Tube for the radiation detection some use a semiconductor instead. These and mostly the older geiger counters seen are pretty big to carry around, so they might not be best suited for a survival situation where you only need to carry the most important things. However if you have land and want to check radiation around the property and drinking water then these are the geiger counters to get because they are very well built units.

These are the once that you normally see people use. They have different units of radiation detection, because when it comes to radiation there are many standards used. some give the measurements in Rads, while other use Sieverts. Some have the maximum radiation value for the measured radioactivity quite low but they will still give you an idea of the amount of radiation in the area. With the units ranging from between background radiation 0.001 mSv/hr all the way up to 10 Sv/h. Normally a dosimeter will measure radiation in micro siverts per hour. If you were to walk into one of the reactor units at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant you probably would get an error reading from your dosimeter because the radiation levels are so high there.

Note that some places outside the exclusion zone in Fukushima that are too radioactive for people to live in have areas where the radiation levels are above 30 Sv/h. So if you are in a area that have high radiation the radiation detectors would also there go off the scale. However Geiger counters or radiation detectors are still favored as general purpose alpha/beta/gamma portable radiation detectors and radiation detection equipment, due to their low cost and robustness. Most come with an LCD Display that show you the radioactivity in the area. Nowdays you will even get alarm sound and the possibility to connect the device to a computer. Either with a Infrared, Bluetooth or USB connection.

So if you look at the radiation detectors for sale that have this, then these radiation detection meters will allow you to make maps of contaminated areas that show where the radiation is high and low. This also will help you to see which areas are becoming more contaminated over time. With several nuclear reactors in the US and around the world located near fault zones that makes it a danger if a big earthquake would hit the area there is always a good choice to have a radiation dosimeter avaliable. I'm sure many in Fukushima would have been grateful to have dosimeters avaliable at the time of the disaster and I am sure you to would be grateful to have a geiger counter handy when you need one.
