Busby - Cold Shutdown Extremely Unlikely at Fukushima

Professor Christopher Busby, scientific secretary to the European Committee on Radiation Risks talks to Russia Today Dec 27, 2011 about the situation at the Fukushima Nuclear Plant. Cold Shutdown Extremely Unlikely. This is an Criminal Affair with the Japanese government and IAEA publishing understated figures on the spread of the radiation.

RT: Fukushima crisis says that it was down to the plants operators being ill prepared and not responding properly to the quake and tsunami disaster. A major government inquire said some engineers abandoned the plant as the trouble started and other staff delayed reporting significant radiation leaks. To discuss more on this I am joined by Professor Christopher Busby, scientific secretary to the European Committee on Radiation Risks.

RT: Thanks for joining us, so the report claims that the operators failed to respond properly and you said before that the authorities had been lax and slow in handling the situation. To what extent do you feel the assessment has been confirmed by these findings?

Busby: Well I think my assessment has been confirmed 100% but I do have to say that I don't think that this enquiry has goon far enough. Because there are lots of questions that they haven't asked and lots of questions that still haven't been answered.

RT: What are some of those?

Busby: Well the main, the most important one has to do with the health effects off the contamination. Now it's kind of assumed that everybody knows that these health effects are not going to be serious, but just like I said before that this was a much more serious incident than anyone were suggesting at the time. I'm now saying or have been saying all along that the health effects will be very much more serious than anyone is saying now. And I can tell you now there will probably be in some years time another enquiry that will show also that I am right there. And this is really sad because actually if they did concede that there was a big problem then people could be moved out and other activities could take place which would ensure that fewer people got sick than are going to.

RT: Why do you think it has taken Japan so long to admit that it's response was inadequate.

Busby: I think that there is an enormous pressure from the nuclear industry and from the people who stand to loose a lot of money with regard to the general nuclear expansion scenario that we have been seeing in the last year or two. I mean for the nuclear industry, this was an absolute disaster and it does seem to me from not only the way in which the Japanese has been constrained to handle this event but also the way in which people all over the world are handling this event through the media. I have to say not Russia Today, and I am very pleased about that. There does seem to be an enormous iron grip on the media with regard to the effects of this terrifying accident, this catastrophe.

RT: The report also said the government published understated figures on the spread of the radiation, can that be justified when millions of life's are at risk.

Busby: Well of course that really is an criminal event as I said before. This is criminal irresponsibility because if people had known the extent of the radioactivity, had the government and I also have to say the international atomic energy agency come clean with the extent of the contamination people would have left. People would have got out and these people who didn't get out would have been seriously contaminated and this will effect their health. So really this is quite an criminal affair and I would hope that eventually that someone would be brought to justice, or at least there should be some court case about it.

RT: Japanese officials claim the plant is now under control but there have been reports that many Fukushima evacuees remain reluctant to return to their homes, do you think those concerns are valid?

Busby: I think that those people should not return to their homes and I think it's extremely unlikely that these reactors are in what they call cold shutdown, I mean I think this is discourse manipulation. Very recently Xenon Isotopes have been released from those plants, and these Xenon Isotopes have sufficiently short half life's for us to know that fissioning is still taking place in those reactors.

RT: Alright and briefly, what do you think should be done with the Japanese nuclear network now?

Busby: Well you know the Japanese nuclear network was always dangerous, it was always built on the coasts in areas where there was tsunamis, it was always build in areas where there possibly were going to be earthquakes so really if I were the Japanese people I would demand that the government closed down the entire nuclear operation in Japan and revert to some other form of generating energy.

RT: What would that be you think?

Busby: Well there have been studies made that show that Japanese, that Japan is very rich in wind power and there is lots of ways in which you can get alternative generation of electricity. But the main problem of course is that there is to much electricity being used, we are burning up the planet in order to continue with a lifestyle which really is not sustainable and I think that is the real answer to all of these questions about nuclear and fossil fuel and the rest of it, we are just burning to much fuel.

Christopher Busby Radioactive Genocide Japan

Christopher Busby talks to us from Stockholm, Sweden. We get to hear about what he thinks is the sinister and horrifying reason behind why the Japanese are now trucking and burning radioactive materials from Fukushima all over Japan even in the south. He talks about what we can do for the children and what is being done to help them. And also how he has been working on making supplements to block the absorption of the Cesium and the absorption of the Strontium 90 and the Plutonium, Uranium.

I have transcribed the whole 10 min video for you.



The Fukushima Catastrophe is probably the worst nuclear disaster in human history, and certainly worse than Chernobyl. The contamination from Fukushima has gone as far south as Tokyo I have measured it personally in air filters from cars. At least 12 different air filters from cars were sent to me, and some of them from the south of Tokyo and many of them 100 km away from Fukushima and they contain very large amounts of radioactivity in them. High levels Cesium 134 and 137. So we can conclude without any doubt that that area up to 200 km maybe more, away from the catastrophe site has been seriously contaminated with radionuclides. Now if the cars are breathing this material and so are the people and so are the children. And so the children will be contaminated with radioactivity, we have recently heard that the Japanese government have been doing whole body counting. That is to say they have been putting some people inside a monitor to see how much Cesium is inside them. And apparently the levels of Cesium are sufficient for them to say that there is no problem, that there not going to be any increases in ill health. At the same time we hear, I hear reports from Japan from mothers of children who say that they are showing all the signs of contamination with Cesium that were also found by my colleague Professor Yuri Bandazhevsky after Chernobyl in the areas of Belarus that were contaminated similarly with this substance Cesium 137.


Now what it did there was that it went into the hearth muscle and it caused conduction difficulties and destroyed hearth muscles so the children in Belarus was suffering hearth attacks and arrhythmias, that’s when the hearth doesn’t beat properly. And of course later on in life they die young from hearth disease because the hearth cells don’t replicate themselves, the heart cells you get all of you’re hearth cells all at once, you get maybe 1% increase in heart cells per year but over the period of time we are talking about there is going to be no replacement for the cells that were damaged by the Fukushima catastrophe in the children. So we have two different points of view here, we have the point of view of the Japanese government who are ignoring it, who are making these superficial measurements of Cesium in the whole bodies of the children and the people, and they are saying that these concentrations are not sufficient to cause any problems, well of course this is an argument that’s going on and on. It’s like a tennis match, it goes backwards and forwards you know the independent scientists say that there is a problem and the government and the nuclear scientists say it’s no problem.


Of course the real problem is that we have to do something about it, I mean I am a father, I have 7 children I have 11 grandchildren and I cant sit back and just let this go on with us in some sort of silly tennis match, between us and the pro-nuclear scientists who are trying to save the industry from collapse. And all the time the children are getting more and more sick and they are building up this level of radioactive damage which will result in them getting sick and dieing with cancer, hearth disease, a whole range of illnesses that were all discovered after Chernobyl. And it’s not as if this is something new, we know what is going to happen, we absolutely know what is going to happen, we have looked very closely at the health effects of the people who where exposed to these same radionuclides after the Chernobyl accident in the same quantities. Not as many people I have to say which is why Fukushima is a worse disaster.


So I decided we have to do something an I have contacted, I was contacted by some people in Japan, who said what can we do. So instead of just moaning about it we decided to do something, now there are actually something we can do. The first thing that we can do is we can actually measure the radionuclides ourselves because frankly we do not believe what the Japanese government are coming out with, we don’t think that they are right. I mean I have measured more radioactivity in a car air filter than they are measuring in a child and the car breaths air in the same way as a child breaths air so I don’t really believe what they are saying. That’s the first point. So we need to have independent testing. And secondly we need to try and do something about these children who are being contaminated, there are two things that we can do.


The first thing is we can take them away from the areas of contamination and put them somewhere where there is reasonable safe, but that leads us to another problem because what’s happening now what I have been told is that the Japanese government are trucking radioactive material from the Fukushima disaster area where it is contaminated all over Japan. And even as far south as the south of Japan, we are now getting reports of radioactivity, radioactive material taking all the way to the south of Japan to be burnt. Now what possible reason could there be for burning it as far away as that. I tell you the reason, it’s really quite sinister and horrifying, there reason is this. That eventually when these children start die from Leukemia from other cancer from hearth disease from whatever, their parents are going to want to go to court. They are going to want to sue the Japanese government and they are going to want to have to say that in order to do that these, in order to do that these children were contaminated and that’s why they got high levels of cancer. But of course the only way that they can say that they got high levels of cancer is to have a control group in an area that’s not contaminated, for example the south of Japan. So I believe that the project to take this material and to burn it all over Japan is to destroy all of Japan, this to increase the cancer rate in the whole of Japan in so that there will be no control group to which that you can compare these children in the Fukushima area. So that’s that point. So we want to take the children away anyway into some safe area that’s what we want to do.


But the second thing that we can do and this is also quite important is that we can try and block the material we can try and block the absorption of the Cesium and the absorption of the Strontium 90 and the Plutonium and the other substances that are not being measured incidentally. We have to wait a minute now because there is a train passing. I’m sitting on a children’s playground here in Sweden this is in Stockholm, and I decided to talk to you from here from Stockholm where there is a significant amount of radioactivity as well I have to say in the Baltic Sea I measured this myself but that’s another question.


So the second thing that we can do is to try and block the ingress of the radioactivity into the child’s body, now we know that we can do this with Iodine because Iodine goes to they Thyroid gland, we give them stable Iodine at least we are supposed to, it turns out that the Japanese government didn’t, and then it stops the bad Iodine the radioactive Iodine from binding to the same sites. And you can do the same thing with the other radionuclides, for Uranium and Plutonium and Strontium 90 which are the most serious and all of which they are not measuring incidentally and non of which can be measured with a whole body counter because they are Alpha emitters and not Beta emitters. We can block that attachment to the DNA by giving large amounts of Calcium and Magnesium, which binds to the DNA and keeps the Strontium and the Uranium of the DNA.


So that’s one thing that these children can do, they can take a tablet every day of stable Calcium and so we are going to produce tablets which contain stable Calcium which we will supply cheaply at the cost of production to parents of these children so that they can take these tablets and block the ingress of these substances. And we are also working on another tablet, which will block the ingress of Cesium 137. Now in order to do this we have set up an organization in Japan called the Christopher Busby Foundation for the Children of Fukushima and it has a website and it’s all in Japanese and it’s all been done by a colleague of mine who contacted me from Japan called James Grand. In addition to this we are going to purchase a large number of highly sophisticated radiation measuring devices from Europe from suppliers in Europe and suppliers in the Ukraine and we are going to make these devices available to the parents and children to measure the concentration of these substances in the food and also to supermarkets and we will measure the substances ourselves. We will set up a laboratory in Japan so that the people can bring these substances to the laboratory and find out the truth about the concentration of radionuclides in these substances. So these are the things that we want to do and we want you to help us in any that you can. This is an operation to save the children of Fukushima because we do not believe that the Japanese government is doing anything to save the children of Fukushima, they are operating on a principle, which is of the principle of saving not the children of Fukushima but the international nuclear industry, and this is disgraceful. Tokyo Radioactivity Higher Than Chernobyl

RT: Now in Japan the government and the plants operator TEPCO have come under heavy criticism from many quarters for the reliability of the information they have been releasing about this disaster. Do you think that we now know the true extent of this crisis?

Prof. Christopher Busby: No, I know that we don't, because I have actually visited there and I have taken quite sufisticated radiation measuring equipment. And I have been able to satisfy myself that the concentrations of radionuclides on ground even as far as 100 and more kilometers away from the plant are very much higher than they have been saying. 

And indeed some measurements that I have been making on airfilters from vehicles from as far away as Tokyo show that the concentrations of caesium 137 for example in these filters is more than 1000 times higher in terms of air concentration than the air concentration that the peak of the weapons fallout in 1963. So we are talking about serious, serious levels of radioactive nuclides. And the problem is that this is effectively being ignored by the authorities concentrating on the external dose rates. So they say, so long as the external dose rate is not more than so many Micro Sieverts Per Hour or whatever it happens to be, everybody is going to be safe.

In some sense they are comparing it with natural background radiation. But actually it can not be compared with natural background radiation. There a very high levels of contamination even as far south as Tokyo. For example, we found one sample in Tokyo that had levels of radioactivity higher than levels inside the Chernobyl exclusion zone. It's a very serious matter.

RT:  So professor Busby how serious are these new cracks to the structure of the Fukushima plant. Should we be alarmed?

Prof. Christopher Busby: Well the fact that steam coming out, and we know from measurements made in California that the steam contains the Isotope Sulfur 35. This Isotope is associated with neutron radiation of chlorine and so what we got here is a cituation were you got fission taking place, an enormous neutron concentration, neutron flux and seawater. And effectively we are producing very large quantities of radionuclides all the time and they havn't been able to deal with that. I was told by somebody who had heard this from a TEPCO official who was talking to the prime minister of Japan who said that the releases from the plant now in the order of 10 to the power of 13 becquerels every hour. So (laugh) we are talking about something that is absolutley ongoing and it's just being ignored. It's not being adequipley reported by the authorities in Japan or in the International Atomic Energy Agency

Geiger Counters - Radiation Detection Meters - Handheld Radiation Detector



When it comes to radiation detection meters you really have a wide field of gadgets to choose from, however radiation detectors are the most common to use. First of all if you need to know what type of radiation you are looking for. There are Alpha, Beta and Gamma radiation detectors. And also there is neutron emission of nuclear radiation. And all these different types of emissions have radiation detectors for a specific type of radiation that you can buy radiation detector for. Some also measure both Alpha and Beta. Others detect Alpha, Beta and Gamma. While others let you measure Beta and Gamma radiation.



What most people have use for though are Dosimeters you can buy a handheld radiation detector pretty cheap that are good addition to a survival kit. There are different kinds that you can use that will detect radiation. There are radiation badges that will tell you when radiation become high. Workers at nuclear power plants use these to inform them of how much radiation they have been exposed to. Now also children in the Fukushima prefecture have each been given a radiation badge so they know if they are exposed to radiation. Some come in the shape of a pen that you can carry in your pocket while other are made more compact so that you can attach them to your keychain. And then you have what is called a personal radiation monitor. These are also called Dosimeters and also normally called Geiger counters. Although not all use the Geiger-Muller Tube for the radiation detection some use a semiconductor instead. These and mostly the older geiger counters seen are pretty big to carry around, so they might not be best suited for a survival situation where you only need to carry the most important things. However if you have land and want to check radiation around the property and drinking water then these are the geiger counters to get because they are very well built units.

These are the once that you normally see people use. They have different units of radiation detection, because when it comes to radiation there are many standards used. some give the measurements in Rads, while other use Sieverts. Some have the maximum radiation value for the measured radioactivity quite low but they will still give you an idea of the amount of radiation in the area. With the units ranging from between background radiation 0.001 mSv/hr all the way up to 10 Sv/h. Normally a dosimeter will measure radiation in micro siverts per hour. If you were to walk into one of the reactor units at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant you probably would get an error reading from your dosimeter because the radiation levels are so high there.

Note that some places outside the exclusion zone in Fukushima that are too radioactive for people to live in have areas where the radiation levels are above 30 Sv/h. So if you are in a area that have high radiation the radiation detectors would also there go off the scale. However Geiger counters or radiation detectors are still favored as general purpose alpha/beta/gamma portable radiation detectors and radiation detection equipment, due to their low cost and robustness. Most come with an LCD Display that show you the radioactivity in the area. Nowdays you will even get alarm sound and the possibility to connect the device to a computer. Either with a Infrared, Bluetooth or USB connection.

So if you look at the radiation detectors for sale that have this, then these radiation detection meters will allow you to make maps of contaminated areas that show where the radiation is high and low. This also will help you to see which areas are becoming more contaminated over time. With several nuclear reactors in the US and around the world located near fault zones that makes it a danger if a big earthquake would hit the area there is always a good choice to have a radiation dosimeter avaliable. I'm sure many in Fukushima would have been grateful to have dosimeters avaliable at the time of the disaster and I am sure you to would be grateful to have a geiger counter handy when you need one.
